Archaeology, History, and Craft Nerds? Come Sit By Me.

And suddenly it’s February. Almost over, February.

First, the writing news: I am deep–deep–into writing the third book in The Bradamante Saga, BOOK OF FIRE. I think this one has taken me longer than the others simply I wish things were easier for the characters in it. Mindful always of the action-adventure motto Things Always Get Worse, I know I have to put them through it, but geez. Sometimes I just want them to be able to grab a cup of coffee and curl up and watch some Netflix. Unfortunately, it’s medieval times, and so that’s not an option.

Hey, speaking of Netflix, I have two recommendations of shows that have absolutely delighted me this month:

First, THE DIG. Based on the historical novel by John Preston, it’s about the real-life archaeological dig in England right on the cusp of World War II that uncovered amazing artifacts in an English lady’s back yard. It stars Ralph Feinnes, Carey Mulligan (love to see her in anything), and Lily James (same). I’ve already watched it twice, and then, completist that I am, I also read the book. If you want a relaxing and beautiful film to escape into for a few hours, check it out.

Also, I am absolutely in love with the Netflix series THE REPAIR SHOP. Their description: Expert artisans restore timeworn family heirlooms with a touching sentimental value while also uncovering their uniquely rich histories. Mind: It’s British, it’s the most relaxing thing ever to watch (people fixing things? Painting and reupholstering and refinishing? Please, all day long). Every night when I knock off writing, I treat myself to another episode before bed. I am so inspired by watching people do their arts and crafts. Maybe you are, too.

Last, for my pals who enjoy some psi and psychic stories to go along with their archaeology, I highly recommend one of the books I used for research of my PARALLELOGRAM series, about archaeologists teaming up with psychic practitioners to see what might be beneath the dirt in various parts of the world before they go to the trouble and expense of digging. It’s called THE SECRET VAULTS OF TIME by Stephan A. Schwartz, and it’s some of the trippiest, coolest stuff you’ll read. If you’re a history buff on top of loving the mysteries of the mind, it’s a great resource and a fun bit of reading.

Now back to writing BOOK OF FIRE. It’s a good thing I believe in happy endings, because otherwise, whew, these poor characters have it rough…

Cheers, and until next time!

P.S. The subscribers to my newsletter get these same updates, PLUS they get coupons and discounts on my books. Why? Because I love to treat my group! So if you enjoy these updates and you want some extra special treatment, you can subscribe here. It will especially come in handy later this year when I start sharing some of the artifacts I’ve been making to go along with The Bradamante Saga. I like to make physical objects in the worlds I create. You’ll see…!
